My son is in New York.He called me and explained to the situation of his roomate who has led him to beleive that he has paid his share of the rent. The landlord is willing to wait, but has given little time for my son to come up with the money(being that he is the liable owner of the lease). What advice could I give him to get rid of his free loading roomate and to get time to make restitution for late monies owed to landlord?

You must wait for the sub to surface, then open the hatch and throw the sucker out to the sharks.

Is the freeloader a co-tenant or a sub-tenant. Did this person sign a lease with L or with your son? Who did free Willy pay his rent to, your son or L directly?
