Live in mountains of S. Calif where firewood is valuable commodity. In October, neighbor's large oak tree fell into our yard, with the canopy landing on and damaging rear neighbor's shed. No damage to our property. Tree-owner neighbor said "Do you and your husband want the wood from the tree?" I replied, "Yes, we'll be happy to cut it up for the wood." She said, "Then it's yours." Husband split and stacked the wood. As husband was stacking the last of the wood, neighbor comes through gate between our properties and demands her "share" of the wood. We offered to give her "a small amount" for her personal stove. Her property is an inn and she wants the wood to sell to her guests. Stacked wood is about 2 cords, worth about $400 split and stacked. Who owns the wood? What are our current legal responsibilities toward this neighbor who now claims she never "gave" us the wood.
