10 feet from fire hydrant

What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? N.Y.C.
i got a traffic ticket for parking 10 feet away from a hydrant, just checked on the net that you have to be 15 feet away from a hydrant. who carries a tape measure with them to measure the distance every time they park? there are no markings or painted curb near the hydrant, so how is one supposed to know how much room they have. i think its unfair and sort of a trap when they issue this sort of summons, how can i beat it?

I would pace out 15 feet on a tape measure. Figure it out by "look", then make sure to part FARTHER than that from the hydrant.
Then again, perhaps you'd rather the fire truck just push your car out of the way (that could turn ugly for your car)

i'd rather the truck push my truck out the way than get a $115 ticket for being reasonably parked. but that doesnt explain how i can beat it

Prove you were parked over 15 feet from the hydrant...

That would be an excellent defense.

Go for it!

A picture of the officer writing the ticket along with a graduated measurement of exactly where 15 feet is would help. They would both need to be in the same picture.

No, not a different ticket...the one he actually wrote for YOU.

Since it's almost time to go home, let me end this now. You cannot PROVE that your vehicle wasn't parked less than 15' from the hydrant without perjuring yourself.

As was stated , you pace ( one of your feet = 1 ft. approx. ) X the # of feet required away from the parking limit ( with any parking limit ) , plus a couple for good luck .

I have beat some , some they were nice enough to reduce the fine .

The ticket must have a proximity ( house address / intersection etc . ) if you were close enough you could draw a diagram / take a picture where your car was , and try to at lease get it reduced in 1/2 , without being a jerk about it .

I have actually called the Sargent , and the Sargent took care of 2 or 3 tickets for me .

They won't send the Sargent anymore .

I won't say what words I had with the parking ticket officer .

You can't, it's the law. Do you live and/or work in NYC? There might conceivably be some leeway if you're from somewhere else where the regulations are different.

One of our violators took a case all the way to the state Supreme Court because he said the city didn't give enough notice about the ordinance he violated. They ruled that if you live in, work in, or frequent the city, you're responsible for knowing the laws.

What's to beat? You parked too close to the fire hydrant, pay the fine, learn your lesson and move on.

You should see what they do if your car is parked in front of the hydrant.
