6-year-old parking tickets pop out of nowhere

COLORADO -- I just received a threatening letter from an attorney's office stating I have 3 parking tickets from back in June of 2001 at $100 each. They all occur within a 1-week period of time, and I don't remember ever receiving these tickets, nor were any further reminders with increased fines ever sent to me back then. So I feel I never even had a chance to pay these at the original price the first time.
Why would a lawyer's letter come to me now, 6+ years later?
How could I possibly have known about these tickets over the years? They never came to light when I was registering other vehicles.
Am I responsible for these at this late date? Is there a statue of limitations on parking tickets?

Yes, you're responsible, no there is no SOL.

Sure you did -- when whoever got the tickets received them. As long as it's your registration and the description of the car matches, they're yours. If it wasn't you, figure out who it was. My money's on a driving-age child.

Of course you're responsible. Not every city reports parking tickets to the state -- mine doesn't, and apparently yours as well.
