Blue Lights on Vehicle

What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? AZ

Is it legal to drive around with teal/blue accent lights? They don't look anything like a blue light a cop would have, but still wondered what the law says about it.

I've heard people tell me it's illegal to have any shade of blue on your vehicle.

exact wording of the restrictions depends on your state, but generally non emergency vehicles should not have direct lighting from anything colored blue.

Arizona Revised Statutes §28-947**Special restrictions on lamps - Arizona Arizona Revised Statutes §28-947**Special restrictions on lamps - Arizona Code :: Justia

Arizona Revised Statutes §28-947 Special restrictions on lamps
...
B. A person shall not drive or move a vehicle or equipment on a highway with a lamp or device on the vehicle that is capable of displaying a red or red and blue light or lens visible from directly in front of the center of the vehicle. Lights visible from the front of a vehicle shall be amber or white.

Whatever happened to that blue LED on the wiper guy?
I'm not a lawyer, but I did stay in a Holiday Inn Express last night.

His thread, which by the way, he had posted under "Other Crimes - Federal/State", was thankfully CLOSED!

It might depend on your state law but, some of the new headlight replacement bulbs that have a tint of blue, claim to be legal. you know, brighter light that the soft lights that have been used.

My first inspection the guy "suggested," that they might not be legal, the second inspection guy said they were.
BTW I got the car used, this way.

Thanks for all the comments/help so far!

My vehicle is a motorcycle, I put the accent lights on the chrome exhaust and below the bike. It can easily be seen from the side, but not visible from the front (unless you're looking at an angle).

I find this quote very interesting:

capable of displaying a red or red and blue light or lens visible from directly
Options are:
1) Red
2) Red AND blue

Mine isn't blue AND red, it is only blue (more like a teal, but still blue).

The wording doesn't state "red or blue or red and blue."

It sounds like the point of the law is not to imitate a police vehicle. Not even for a second would I except these accent lights to look like a police cruiser or similar vehicle.

Btw, I did a search for "blue" on that Justia website, doesn't come up with anything else about blue lights not being legal. Is this a valid assumption that it is not mentioned anywhere else in the ARS?

Any other comments on what the law says for AZ would be much appreciated.

Of course, the other thing to consider is do you really want to get pulled over by every cop in the city every time you turn them on?

You may win in court... but you will have to go to court to fight it... every time.

- I really only plan to turn them on when I'm driving down dark roads. I do a lot of night riding (in AZ it's just so damn hot outside to ride during the day), even then, I wouldn't always be turning them on.

Usually the places I ride do not have many cops anyways, it's so far away from the city that I wouldn't be too worried about getting pulled over all the time.

It's definitely something I thought more about now, than I did before I bought them. I probably would have gone with a green LED instead of a blue one if I knew for sure it wasn't legal or would cause problems.

It wasn't until I put them on when people told me they've heard of others getting ticketed for blue lights.

really? once is enough for me. granted i never ran into a rude police officer yet, but i try to avoid getting pulled over. granted i did get my first speeding ticket yesterday, but i learned my lesson. cruise control is my friend. i'd just avoid the hassle and change the LED lights.

Any other legal advice? Or is that ARS link the only written law about this issue?

i'd just avoid the hassle and change the LED lights.
- It took about 2 hours just to install the LEDs, would take about 30 minutes to remove them, and probably an hour to reinstall them again in a different color.

As long as it is not illegal, I may just take my chances on the road and hope if I do get pulled over, I'll at least know the law, have done my research, and know how to act around a cop.

Thanks again for all the help and comments, this place is always very helpful.

That is exactly why this forum requires posters to include the name of their state along with their question.
The only thing worse than getting into an argument about politics is getting into an argument because you refuse to argue politics.
