CA Licensce Renewal Issues

What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? CA

new here... hoping someone can help.

I noticed that my license expired (on mother's day), but never received a renewal notice. i did some digging online and can only think of 2 possible reasons.

Reason 1) We moved right after my prev license renewal. I'm pretty sure i submitted an address change, but my DL still has my old address

I don't know if this could be a possible reason

Reason 2) this is the scary one... I think i may have failed to file an SR-1 report? I was in an accident with >$750 damage a few weeks after I had a baby. I was/am insured at the time. I was pretty shaken up by things (both my older son and the newborn were in the car at the time). I assume that they took care of everything since i didn't talk with anyone other than my insurance person.

i know i didn't file one. between newborn and being in an accident for the 1st time, i was a mess.

looking at the form now, it does say that my insurance can file it for me. it's all so fuzzy. i just don't know.

so my question for anyone who's been in this or has legal background....

should i be freaking out or is this simply a matter of needing to prove i've moved....am i in big trouble? how do i fix this? what are my options?

please help.

What did the DMV say when you went to their office to ask them this question? There is no way this forum can help you if you don't have the information. I suspect that your address was never changed...not that it matters, since it's your responsibility to make sure you license is valid.

Go to the DMV and try to renew your license. if it can NOT be renewed, they will tell you why there is a hold on your license and how it can be corrected.

Always remember, a courtesy notice is a courtesy, it is not a requirement. They do not have to send you one and there could be a hundred and one reasons why you did not get one. No one here can narrow those possibilities down for you.

thanks for the replies. to be honest, i haven't gone to the dmv yet. that's this coming monday.

the reason why i'm freaking out is b/c i was assuming that a courtesy notice was never sent (understanding they're not required to). i went online to see what i needed to bring for my renewal and returned search results for things like suspended license and it got me scared b/c i never thought of that possibility until i read it.

don't know if this is also a courtesy notice thing, but i never received anything from the DMV telling me i had a suspended license.

also, i got a tix 2 months ago (completed traffic school for) for rolling a stop. and the cop didn't mention anything about a suspended license.

basically, you're telling me not to freak until i actually GO into the dmv. i'll calm down for now then...

When you got pulled over for the rolling stop and the officer asked if the address on the license was your current address, what did you say? You probably just forgot to update your address.

My boss always wondered why he never got a renewal notice for company car registration. After he left the company and later returned ending up with the same car, he got a ticket for expired registration. It was not until then that we noticed the registration address was Newport Beach, "IL" (our HQ is in California, our office is Elgin, IL)

My state doesn't send them at all any more. Can you imagine the expense? Plus, as stated before, we're all responsible for knowing when our licenses expire.

A suspension is an entirely different animal.

If your license is SUSPENDED that will be a harder thing to deal with than if it is merely expired.

Which is it?

Furthemore, if your license did get suspended and knowing that the DMV will send you a notice of suspension, and assuming you never changed your address with the DMV, that notice went to the old address...
