Car impounded at airport

What is the name of your state? New York. Left car at JFK Intl Airport Long-Term Parking in May, 2006. Fees were to be paid by employer; did not happen. Car was probably impounded by Port Authority Police. Insurance was cancelled & my driver's license suspended. In order to reinstate my license I must return the plates to DMV. The fee to retrieve the car will be more than the car is worth, and I can't afford that. Even then, I can't drive the car out of impound with a suspended license & no insurance. Can I get the plates and leave the car? How do I go about doing this? Many thanks. What is the name of your state?

Uh, have you called them to ask?

However, from what I know of their procedures at the impound lots, I highly doubt they'll let you take anything out of the vehicle, much less the plates.

You say that the car was "probably" impounded by the Port Authority Police ... if you don't know, how do you know it was not stolen?

If your employer was supposed to pay the fees and their failure to do so resulted in this issue I'd say that you likely have a good civil claim against them for any costs you incur as a result.

If the DMV needs the plates, then you need to contact the impounding agency or their tow service. In my state if you fail to retrieve a car they put it up for a lien sale in 31 days. If your car has not already been scheduled for such a sale, offer to sign it over to them in exchange for the plates so that you can turn it over to the DMV.

Ultimately you may have to acquire the services of an attorney to negotiate your way through this morass.
