Does anybody know?

What is the name of your state? IN

Does anybody know if your driver's license in Indiana can get suspended for a single unpaid parking ticket?

I suspect that one of my daughter's friends is trying to con her mother into giving her money to reinstate a license that probably isn't suspended. I haven't been able to find anything on the net, so I thought I would ask here.

With so many posts I am wondering what section of law you are knowledgeable in.

An educated guess would be that a driver's license CANNOT be suspended for an unpaid PARKING ticket. Why not? Because the owner of the vehicle might have NOT been the driver.

However, a driver's license CAN be suspended for an unpaid MOVING violation, since the driver is identified.

IC 9-30-11-3
Notification of failure to pay judgments
Sec. 3. If it appears from the records of a court that has jurisdiction to enforce ordinances that regulate parking violations that three (3) judgments concerning a motor vehicle have not been paid before the deadlines established by a statute, an ordinance, or a court order, the clerk of the court shall send a notice to the person who is the registered owner of the motor vehicle. The notice must inform the person of the following:
(1) That the clerk will send a referral to the bureau if the judgments are not paid within thirty (30) days after a notice was mailed.
(2) That the referral will result in the suspension of the motor vehicle's registration if the judgments are not paid.
As added by P.L.2-1991, SEC.18.
It would seem that it takes three but don;t count on this completely. I did not research it much to come up with this.

from this, it seems that not the drivers license but the auto registration is what is in jeopardy.

With 2 or more delinquent parking tickets, your car is eligible for a wheel lock and you have 24 hours to pay your tickets or your car can be towed. To get your car out of impound, it is $75 for the wheel lock, you must pay the ticket costs (fines double within 14 days of notice to pay), and you must pay the towing and impound charges. With 3 or more unpaid tickets, your registration is suspended. Driving with a suspended registration results in fines (occassionally jail) and a $150 feeto reinstate your registration. Failure to appear to pay your tickets can result in a license suspension. You cannot renew your license or get new tabs for your plate until you get your registration reinstated.

Basically, it is just a whole lot easier and cheaper to pay the tickets.

do you have something to support that? I posted the Indiana statute that seemed to control what actions can be taken and it required 3 and then the registration can be suspended until the tickets are dealt with. It does not direct any other adverse actions that can be taken.

Where did you find your info?

btw; the "tabs" are the registration external indications. Of course you could not get new tabs, remember, your registration is suspended. Why would you need to get new "tabs" anyway? Your current registration is still valid, merely suspended.

justalayman -

The Indiana Code was updated to reflect 2007 General Assembly changes. You can check the Indiana Legislative Services Agency, Office of Code Revision, or go to www.In.gov. Indiana Code 9-30-11 talks about parking tickets. (But I also have a source in Indiana government, who helped me avoid all the googling )

A notice is sent to the person who has 3 or more parking tickets informing them that they have 30 days to pay. If the tickets are not paid, a notice that registration will be suspended is sent - no registration, no driving. Until you pay your tickets, you cannot renew your license or get tabs for your plates - which you must renew every year in order to drive. 15 days after this registration suspension notice is sent, the police can remove the license plates. The cost for reinstatement of registration is, I believe, $150.00.

With 2 unpaid tickets, you only have to pay for the tickets and $75 for wheel locks (if they are used by the police). If you pay within 24 hours, you avoid the possibility of adding towing and impound charges to that.

But to answer your question, LdiJ - one unpaid parking ticket will not result in a license suspension.
