Expired meter on handicapped car

I live in NJ I received a ticket for expired meter in a shore based town which offers no handicapped parking by the boardwalk. To make it worse we were just getting up to car when he was writing ticket yet still got one. I know yes we were wrong and it did expire but shouldnt there be some kind of grace period for the handicapped esp since it takes us a little longer to get around. I have cancer and they had to remove my hamsting in left leg so takes a while to get around since I have to sit alot to rest it or pain gets unbearable. Is there anything like writing a letter to police that may help thanks

Overtime handicapped parking ticket

NJ law C:39:4-207 states that you cannot be given a ticket for overtime parking with handicapped plates/placard for up to 24 hours.( you have to put original coin in the meter, though. Plead not guilty. Maybe you'll have the pleasure of watching the judge verbally lambast the cop in court. See NJ Division of Disability services site.
