Expired registration ticket NYC

What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? NYC

I was parked in front of my house and received an expired registration ticket on 8/09/08, my registration expired on 8/08/08 so they were obviously just waiting on me. Anyway the thing is that I had the registration at home for over a while but forgot to change it because:
1. I thought, like the inspection sticker, it was good for the whole month not a specific day
2. I was in the process of having the windshield replaced between the time I got the new registration and the time I got the ticket so i wanted to obviously wait until I got the new windshield before I changed stickers, then forgot .

If I can prove that I had the registration paid for and at home before I got the ticket can I get the ticket dismissed or should I not even bother?

**A: not a defense as a new windshield has absolutely nothing with an expired registration sticker.
