Expired Tags -> SummonsWhat is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? CO I am a new resident of Colorado, having arrived on 1/1/2009 for a job in the Denver area. I was in a pretty bad financial state and it took me several months to get to the point where I had enough extra cash to start catching up on maintenance and repairs to my car which, as it turns out, needed over $1200 to address emissions problems (I ended up qualifying for a waiver). On 8/17/2009--the day I was driving my car to the mechanic to get the emissions system repaired--I was pulled over. I received a summons to appear in court on October 22, 2009 for the following:
I did have current insurance at the time but I had forgotten to replace the card in my car. Since being pulled over, I have gotten the license and registration and have paid all fees and taxes. I have spent almost $3000 over the past 2 months to get this taken care of, including fees and taxes. Does anyone have any advice on how to mitigate or perhaps even avoid penalties, points, and a legal record? Last edited by rockymtnn00b; 09-19-2009 at 04:26 PM. Reason: Putting the question of state name back :) |

| Get a letter from your insurance company (not broker) giving the vehicle information and stating that on the date in question the vehicle was insured. As far as the registration, what are you looking for? Your registration was months expired. You should not have been driving the car. |

| I heard from an attorney this morning and it was his opinion that they will probably drop the proof of insurance charge as long as I provide proof that I was insured at the time I was pulled over. I will likely have to pay a fine for the expired tags, but that may be mitigated since I've gotten all the repairs and such done since. If, for some reason, they do not drop the proof of insurance charge, then I probably have a fight on my hands, but I'll cross that bridge if I come to it. Thanks for the reply. |
