What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Oklahoma

Got pulled over in a small town in Oklahoma this weekend for speeding. The officer was kind enough to not ticket me for speeding. However, I was in my "hunting" truck which I only drive to and from the hunting lease. The tags had expired back in September.

The officer told me that he had to impound my vehicle by state law. I asked him if instead of impounding my vehicle, could I just go to a tag agency and update my registration right then. He agreed, and wrote me a ticket for "Failure to pay state taxes."

My question is this...

I've had friends who've gotten tickets for not having current registration tags, and once they got their registration current the ticket was dismissed. Is this type of violation different?
