Exclamation

False registration on car

What is the name of your state?ILL
My future ex had a car in his name that I was driving. The plate had expired and he didnt re-new it. Instead he took the sticker off a totalled car from a body shop that he worked for, and put it on the car that I was driving, supposedly until he could "take care of it". Well at random, I got pulled over. I didnt think anything of the sticker, which is why I was pulled over. Obviously the sticker wasnt the right one. I was given a ticket for that AND the officer asked for my insurance card, I gladly showed him, and wouldnt you know it, my husband didnt re-new that as he had told me he did the week before, so I was given yet another ticket! Well he said that he took care of both tickets so I didnt think of it any longer. I have since left this loser, BUT when I went to change my address on my license at the DMV I was told that I couldnt due to unpaid tickets. HE DIDNT pay them!! How can I hold him responsible, since I didnt do anything wrong. The officer did admit that I wasnt at fault but with what my future ex pulled and did with the sticker, he had to issue me that ticket. Please tell me I am not screwed with this and that I CAN hold him liable!!!

As a technical note, when you drive a car, you assume responsibility for the safe and legal operation of the car. Any citations issued would go to you by default in most instances.

As a practical matter, you may well be screwed. You certainly don't want to trust him to pay any current tickets, since he didn't take care of the last ones.

There may be remedies to hold him accountable, such as small claims court, but they're such a huge hassle that it may not be worth bothering.

My advise: First, take care of the tickets that are holding up your license, and reinstate it. Go to court on the date indicated, and ask the prosecutor for leniency. With the license issue fixed, maybe he'll listen.
