given summons after stopped to ask directions

What is the name of your state? What is the name of your state? Massachusetts

My friend was coming over and got lost, so he saw a state cop and stopped him to ask for directions. the officer started questioning him right away "is this your car? have you been drinking tonight? have you ever been arrested before?" and a whole bunch more. I drove over to meet him to he could follow me back home, and when i got there, the officer was running his plate and license. the cop ordered me to go across the lot, and wait until they were done. He said that he ran his info. because my friend had an expired inspection sticker. he came back and said "i thought u said u were never arrested before" (my friend got arrested years ago in college for small possession of marijuana- but the case was dropped) and because of that, he did a complete search of his car and patted him down. he did this for almost an hour and finally found a tiny amount (about 1/4 gram) of marijuana in his backpack, and gave him a summons to court and said he was doing him a favor and giving him only a verbal warning for the expired sticker.

my question is: is there any violation of due process in this scenerio- because the oficer never even pulled him over, and my friend actually stopped the cop just to ask directions? any feedback is really appreciated. thanks!
