Inspection sticker

What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Maine

I was wondering if anyone knew the process police go through for checking your inspection sticker. A friend of mine made a joke taking a sticker and putting it on his care and it got me thinking. I know my sticker doesn't have anything specific written on it, the spot for the vin# isnt even filled in... If that's the case with most stickers then wouldn't they be interchangeable? If that's not the case, then should I be figuring out why my sticker isn't filled in?

For the record, this isn't a round about way of saying "Can I use a fake sticker?". I just had my inspection this month.
