Need some advice asap...

I was driving my sister's car not knowing her registration was suspened, I wasn't speeding nor was I driving all over the place but the police pulled me over anyway, and I had no reason to suspect that her registration was expired because her tags were up to date so my question is can the police run a persons license plate number whenever they want?
