Neighbor with 8 cars

California

My neighbor has over 14 people living in their 3100 sq ft house. They own 8 cars and park them all over the neighborhood, but typically 5 abreast accross their own driveway and in front of their house.

Is this legal? Is it only illegal if they park in front of someone else's driveway?

Thanks.

If they are parking in their driveway, or parking on the street, there isn't anything you can do about it. Street parking is always first come, first served, and anybody can park on any street, unless the city passes an ordinance otherwise.

If they are parking on the lawn, then check if there is a local ordinance against that.

If they are parking on their driveway and on the street, as HomeGuru would say, "mind your own business."

EDIT: Just as an aside, I feel for you, because I know what it's like. I just moved last summer -- before that, I lived in a house for 8 years next to a growing (and I do mean) growing house and household. At the end, there were probably 12 or 14 people living in a 4000+ square foot house (the house was added on until it filled nearly the entire lot!), and when combined with the family across the street (2 parents + 4 teenagers = 6 cars), it was impossible to park on the street within 3 or 4 houses of our house (and it was a STEEP hill to walk up or down). But there wasn't really anything you can do about it -- there is no law which says how many cars you can own, and, unless you have an HOA, most neighborhoods have no ordinances on how many cars you can park near your house, so you may just have to deal with it. I feel for you, but there probably isn't anything you can do.

Contact your city's police department or code enforcement office and see if they can take a look at it. 14 people under one roof may be a violation of a health or planning ordinance, and the vehicles are very likely subject to abatement if they are parked in a discarded manner on the yard.

It might be worth a couple o fphone calls.

I have a single older gentleman living across the street from me, he has at least 8 cars in front of his house and most don't run. Ah, one of the joys of living in the unicorporated rural areas of a large metropolitan county.

Other than the cars, he keeps his home and yard looking good.

Just mind your own business! No calls to anyone local is needed. A family is allowed to have a large family if they choose to.

Why are people such *******s.

Because turning your property into a used car lot or a repository for rusty heaps of scrap metal can be a blight. If the vehicles are inoperative and/or not being used, not only can they attract critters nobody wants, but they can also leak wonderful things on to and IN to the ground, and they can be a physical danger to small children who might be playing near them.

If the cars are running and parked appropriately then I would agree that there is no problem. But, I'm guessing that the neighbor's property looks like a used car lot.

Yes, but they ought to take responsibility for their family - IE, not completely ruin the resale value of the neighborhood. It's entirely possible to have a large family and NOT be a public nuisance.

I agree, people are such *******s, except I would probably consider YOU one, rather than the person dealing with their neighbor's "used car lot" on the front lawn.

And to the OP: next time you see them randomly adding a wing onto their circus, call the authorities to report building without a permit . It was the only way to deal with a large group of illegal aliens in a past neighborhood of mine, since INS twiddles their thumbs and never does what they're supposed to.

I couldn't agree with you more. What on Earth makes people think that they can do anything they want on their property with no regard for their neighbors? I'm thrilled that you own an antique commode, but I don't want to see it in your front lawn!

It amazes me that people have to be told such things

I am having a similar problem with my neighbor parking one of his crappy cars in front of my house and leaving it for weeks. I was told to call the CHP which I did, and they told me they would look into it and if warranted, issue a warning to move it within 72 hours. Problem is, the car belongs to a CHP officer, so of course, nothing is being done about it. I've thought about putting a flyer on his windshield that says "FREE - YOU TOW" in hopes he would be afraid someone would steal it so he'd move it. If I did this, and it was stolen, what would be the repercussions for me?? Thanks.

Have you talked to your neighbor about this?

He said it's legal. I asked him if he still lives there and he said it's none of my business. (which it is) We have had numerous problems in the past (too many to post) and I believe he's doing it for spite. There's a vacant lot directly across from their house where he could leave his car and not bother anyone, but he won't. He is the epitome of the macho, arrogant, sexist, cop with a badge.

It's usually not legal to park cars on someone else's lot - vacant or not.

CHP or not, your city or county likely has a code regarding parking of vehicles. However, if the car is legally registered and operable, it is perfectly legal to leave it parked on the street for as long as he wants ... barring any city or county code providing a time limit, of course.
