No parking -- anywhere?

What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? New York
Several other cars (and mine) were parked on a side of a street while we went fishing. When we returned, the police were leaving each of us tickets for violating Section1200 D of the vehicle traffic code. There was a sign that said "No Parking" but it was on the opposite side of the street. We thought that we couldn't park on that side of the street. The officer said that the sign applied to the whole area. Is this true?What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)?

Depends on the street. One way, two way, how many parking lanes, etc.
