Parking near a hydrant

What is the name of your state? New York

I went into Manhattan with my grandmother who has a handicap tag for the rear view mirror. Unfortunately, like always, there's almost no parking in the area, well the best we could do was park a little close to a hydrant, but with her troubles walking, and needing my help, there was little choice but to park there. Tag was displayed on mirror, and I came back to see a ticket for parking too close to the hydrant, but can I fight it since my grandmother was with me and we had her handicap tag?

No. Regardless of the "reason", what you did was illegal?

Although you didn't state if you had a NYS or NYC handicap "tag", it doesn't matter. Neither give you permission to block a hydrant. Check the ticket to see if there are any fatal flaws, because that's the only way out.

(You may be eligible for a settlement, but I'm not positive if the PVB disqualifies hydrant tickets from that program. You can call any office and ask though. If you do qualify, it's an automatic 20% off the fine).
