release of liability, lein sale tow collections.

What is the name of your state? California

Hello, Sorry if this isn't the correct section. Thanks in advance.

I have sold a car in the past, 2002, released of liability filed with DMV, now over 2 years later a tow company sent me a notice of pending lein sale for towing and storage fees.

I have contacted them, and was redirected by them to an agent they use for registration service, I have since contacted the angent, left a message with the information of the owner I sold the car to, and asked if they need a copy of my release of liability from dmv and how to submit it to them.. I haven't heard from the agent and I have since read that they submit the owner of record to collections so the tow company can get paid, regardless. In turn this counts against the owner of records credit score and I want to protect my credit. What are the steps I need to do to get this car out of my name and protect my credit.

Bad news ... a "release of liability" does not transfer title to the car. If you never signed over the title to the person - and completed the appropriate paperwork - then you are still the legal owner of the vehicle.

However, you should be free and clear of any liability for parking and tow fees. See this link:
