Teacher Ticketed in front of schoolOn my first day of school in the Bronx (NYC), I was parked in front of the school with my Dept. of Ed. permit visible (the ticket I received verifies this). I was cited for parking in violation of the street cleaning sign. Clearly, on any other street this is understandable. But this is the only street teachers can park on and no one at the school has ever received such a ticket before in the two years I've been there. Do I have any rights in this case? What is the name of your state? New York |

| Actually, it depends how the signs were placed. Sometimes the street cleaning sign and the school day sign are placed on the same pole. In which case you have no claim. However, if the signs incorrectly implies that you may park there on a street cleaning day, then you may submit your defense with lots of photos. Include the street signs at the end of the block and all no parking/standing signs of the block.

If a sign on the first pole says "teacher parking by permit only" and the second sign on a different pole says "no parking on Monday (street cleaning)", what makes you think there's anything implied?

| The general rule on the signs in NYC are as follows. Let's say there is a "No Parking Anytime" sign pointing left. Then further left there is a sign "No Parking 7-7pm School Days". Even though the "No Parking Anytime" sign is also pointing left, the law follows the sign nearest to the parking spot. If the law wanted both signs to govern the parking spot, then they are usually put on the same pole. A common example is the street cleaning and meter signs found on the same pole. While the NYC code clearly states that one sign is enough for the whole block, this is refering in a case where the same parking restrictions are applied to the entire block.
