Think the city might settle for half?

State: Utah
City: Salt Lake

I have roughly $2,400.00 in parking tickets on one street, in front of a Gaming Center. This happened in 2005. I have split this into two sections because some are for one issue, some are for another.

Part 1:
I'd say atleast three fourths of these are for meter violation. Regardless of what excuses I throw up, nothing seems to get them to understand there's no where else to park downtown. The gaming center doesn't have change, I took quite a few hits and figured i'd get to them later (and i totally spaced out about them). Well as you can guess, I got a nice reminder from the salt lake justice court. Those petty $30-$40.00 parking tickets are now $100.00+ a piece. Is there anyway I can settle if I was able to pay them all off at half price? I don't even recall getting reminders about them ( And I now understand that it's my duty to take care of business). My reasoning as to why I think there could possibly be a way is beacuse Gold's Gym said they'd settle for half if I paid them now.

Part 2:
Here's the part that really gets on my nerves. I'd say the other quarter of these are double ticklets or no ticket was there. IE- I got many in the same day. I'd go out to look at the new pink slip, pull it off and put it in my pocket (due weather conditions. Then I'd see dates where I wasn't even at the gaming center!)

I'm not doubting that i'm mostly at fault here, but to pay $2,400.00 over 2 years at $100.00 a month is really a financial burder at the moment.

Any advice?

In other words, they were preventable and you made a conscious and knowing decision to roll the dice.

This is not an excuse to the citations. Additionally, I'd wager that this is just not true. I'm gonna guess that there IS parking, but that it is either farther away or you have to pay more. Perhaps if you were to take public transportation to the center you would not have this problem. Just think of the $1,800 (3/4 of what you say you owe) this would have saved!

Then bring change WITH you. I used to do this all the time when I would go downtown where I lived.

That's why you owe so much.

You can beg and snivel, but they do not have to agree to anything. But, it might not hurt to ask.

On the other hand, they may just decide to seize your car. At least in my state your car can be impounded for more than 5 parking cites. And at even $120 apiece you still have 20! Hmmm ... you wanna guess how much impound fees might be?

Huh? What does "Gold's Gym" have to do with your parking citations??

"MOSTLY" at fault? Who else's fault might it be??

A little forethought would have been nice. The fact that you received and ignored more than 20 of these things is not going to endear you to the city. They have no incentive to deal with someone who is literally pissing on their regulations thinking he can get away with them. You KNEW the consequences for parking at an expired meter yet you continued to do so.

Yep. Start paying your debts, and invest is rolls of quarters every chance you get. Oh, and if you stop going to the gaming center, you might save some of the money used for THAT and be able to pay your debt sooner.
