towed bc of plate error

NY

Last weekend, I was given a parking ticket for an expired meter and towed immediately (I was only gone from my car for 15 minutes so it must have been).

I was in Brooklyn last weekend and live in CT. I drive a car that's registered in CT and have no prior tickets on my car and no moving violations, I've never paid a traffic ticket late. But I was thinking the out of state plates might be a reason they would like to tow my car for an expired meter...

but when I went to pick up my car (paid the $185 tow fee), i checked the ticket on the windshield. It was the wrong license plate on the print-out of the ticket

I ended up checking that plate number on the NYC.Gov/finance website and they had several unpaid tickets (scofflaw) to the tune of $400.

What should i do? I have no problem paying my own parking ticket but it seems to me that I got towed because they thought I was this other dude who never pays tickets. I know there is a bill for "wrongful tow" in nys (a04022). What is the procedure for that?

What do you mean "a bill"?

You have to contact whatever agency towed the car (NYPD, DOT, etc) and find out from them what the procedure is. In the mean time what are you doing with the parking ticket? Or did they make you pay it before releasing tha car?

Oh, and for the record, all of NYC is a tow away zone. This means you can get towed for ANY parking violation.

Because of that your chances of getting reimbursed might not be so good, unless you paid other fees relating to the scoffs.

I thought everyone knew this, but guess not. Here's some more info from the NYT this past summer:

Actually, I've read that article in my own research. But that still seems to be talking about cars with multiple tickets not being eligible for a free tow.

Look, I left my car at 10:06. the ticket was at 10:17 and I came back at 10:21. That's hardly enough time to get my 4-wheel drive sedan onto a flat bed truck and drive away. It certainly didn't have time to accumulate multiple infractions. Oh right, NYPD gave me a plate # on the ticket that ALREADY had multiple tickets on record.

whatever, cutting my losses.

A bill is not a law (yet)

If it's a bill it's not a law yet so it doesn't apply. That's why I questioned you because your statement made it sound like it's in effect. Or didn't you know that?
