unpaid parking tickets do i have to pay?

Hi Im from california and have MANY outstanding parking tickets. But all the vehicles which the tickets were issued for have all been towed and auctioned off. So i want to know if I will encounter problems if I buy another car and try to register it. any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank You !

They probably have a plate suspension barring you from registering any vehicles in your name until you get it cleared up.

Does it matter that I will registering the vehicle in a different county (Los Angeles County) ? A friend told me he had outstanding parking tickets on his car and it got towed/sold and he was able to get another car and register it. He said the tickets go away with the car.

License plate suspensions are handled by the state DMV. Thus, if you get a parking ticket suspension in San Diego and move to Los Angeles and try to register it, it'll follow you.

Parking tickets in CA are connected to the vehicle and not the driver. I have heard people here talk that they can be connected to a driver, but I'm not really sure how that's done and I have never heard of it being done that way.

I suspect that if the liens have been satisfied by the impound and sale of the vehicles that you would probably be able to register a new vehicle unless your name has somehow been flagged.

So, why on Earth do you rack up so many parking tickets that you lose your cars? It seems silly to spend a few grand on a car and then lose it this way.

What do you mean by "liens"? And what would cause your name to be flagged ?

And actually these vehicles I purchase for around $300-$400 from a good friend of mine that is a mechanic. He gets these beaters and fixes them and the amount it would cost to get the car out of impound and pay off the tickets just isnt worth it so I let them auction it off. - Neil

If the parking citation is not paid, most cities will report this to the DMV. The DMV will withhold or withdraw registration for the vehicle until those fines are paid or will simply tack on those fines to the cost of re-registering the vehicle.

Unless they have gone to collections, chances are that the sale of the vehicle at auction will be used to satisfy those liens (holds) against the car.

And I have no idea if the DMV would flag the registered owner's name for parking violations. It is my understanding that this does not happen, but then I don't know everything about the DMV.

Well, one of these days they are going to hit you up for the money directly. They CAN choose to send these to collections. And if the auction does not satisfy the amount owed, they might come after you for the balance. If you don't care about your credit rating, then maybe it's no big deal. But, if you ever want to get a loan or buy something on time, it might be a good idea to change your ways before it all comes back to bite you in the behind.

I never said I felt I shouldn't have to pay for the tickets. My question was If I still had to pay them if my car got auctioned off. And judging by the responses it seems I dont have to. - PPDaddy

What response says you don't have to pay for your violation of the law??

Since the judgments are probably settled by the sale of the car (since the judgment is tacked onto the cost of registration) I presume that he could only be held liable for any difference in the sale amount and the cost of the tow and fines. Its possible that if the auction failed to pay the fines that the tow company could send the debt to collections. But, my guess is that the debt does not follow around the owner of the car.

At least I have never heard of it doing so. It might, but I have yet to see a CVC section that mentions that. The only sections I find mention the fines being tacked on to the registration or going to collections.
