Want to clean up revocations from the 80's in NYS

What is the name of your state? New York

I hope someone can help me. I just received my driving abstract and it shows when I lived in New York City my licence were revoked in 1986 for operating without insurance (3 charges on the same incident), and a suspension for failing to respond to a ticket. I had a revocation again in 1987 for operating without insurance. I also had a suspension pending submission to an out of state court in 1987 for driving without a licence in MD. (It has been cleared up in MD, but is still on my New York Abstract). I know it wasn't smart, but I was young and very irresponsible. Today I'm living in PA and need to get this cleared up to get my license reinstated and move on with my life. I'm just not sure where to begin....I don't know if It's a matter of paying fines (I realize they will be hefty) or if I need a lawyer, or if I'm looking at jailtime. Any help would be most appreciated.
ThanksWhat is the name of your state?

This is confusing.

You live in PA now, right?

Do you have a PA drivers license?

If no, go to the PA DMV and ask how you get your license.

Thanks for the reply and yes....I live in PA now and have no license. I assumed I had to clear my driving record in New York first.

Never assume.

Go the PA DMV and see what you need to do. It is possible (in fact nearly certain) thatyou will have to deal with the NY court issues. The DMV will have advice for you on exactly what steps to take first to get your PA license.

Good luck and best wishes on taking responsibilty

You can also simply go to the source...the NY DMV.

In my experience, I doubt the NYS DMV would be helpful in getting a PA license.

Their bureaucracy is byzantine.

In fact they can be decidedly unhelpful and would probably have some ridiculous solution like him being required to move back to NYS, get relicensed and then move back to PA. That sounds like a bit of a hyperbole, and it is, but only a bit.

I stick to my guns, deal with the NYS DMV as little as possible, and deal with the state you plan to get your license in. If that state has requirements, fulfill those requirements only. If they require things done in another state only do those things.

Avoid fees and assements and testing and needing to appear in NY if possible. Zero chance of avoiding scads of those things with NY while relicensing out of state.

Also look into what PA DMV has the easiest road test. You will probably be taking it.

I still disagree. He will not be able to get a PA license until the NY one is straightened out and they are not going to take the time to figure out what he needs to do to please NY. But, no, he won't be required to move back to NY, but he would probably find it cheaper to do so. It is hard to get license problems fixed long distance. That is a fact regardless of what 2 states you're talking about.
