Sleep for safety?

If I drive for a few hours, during the drive I get sleepy and pull over in a safe area of the shoulder and sleep. I do not want to sleep while driving. Trying to find a offramp and a hotel is not a solution. The change in plans has me wide awake by the time I am done interacting with people at check-in desk. I will be ticketed if law enforcement cars drive by and see me asleep safely on a shoulder?
