What is the name of your state? WA State

My father passed away recently without a will. He has no property, a savings account with 0$, and owes the IRS and collection agencies. He did live on social security and a pension.
My question is his pension has a death benefit and does that have to be used to pay his debt?

Q: My question is his pension has a death benefit and does that have to be used to pay his debt?

A: The general rule is that if you take something from an estate (i.e., an asset) then you must use it to pay the bills of the decedent.

But, answer zig's question first.
