What we have is my mother was the only child of my grandfather. He died in January and left his sister-in-law his property. She died two months after him, before probate was complete. My mother has also passed, last November - she was abandoned by this man as a child, he had no other children and didn't mention her in his will. The question I have is does the person willed have to live through probate for them(or their heirs) to continue to be the heir, or would my mothers children have a chance at contesting the will?

Possibly. It would depend on the wording and the validity of the will which only an estate attorney could advise.

The estate goes to her heirs either by will or by state law.
