What is the name of your state? CO
My dad lived in Houston, TX. I just received his death certificate. How do I go about finding out if he had life insurance? How do I get the money in his bank account transferred to my siblings?

Hire a probate attorney in Houston to file to become administrator of his estate and then the administrator claims the money and distributes it to the heirs. And be sure to ask your attorney whether there are special procedures in that county for expediting a smaller estate.

The insurance will pass outside of probate if it exists and there are beneficiaries listed. As for the other issues, probate should only be opened if and when you identify assets which your father owned.

Do you know if your father owned a home, where he worked or did work?
