Definition of 'next of kin' - California

What is the name of your state? California

I am researching probate law re a question I posted earlier. I am struggling to find any definitions of 'next of kin' I am particularly interested in whether a half sister (same mother) has the same standing as a brother.

Anyone know? or give me a clue on what to search for
