What is the name of your state? Minnesota

Our son passed away earlier this month at the age of 46. He was developmentally disabled since birth and lived at home with us all of his life. He received disability Social Security and worked on a part-time basis at the local Goodwill Industries. The only asset he had was less than $3,000 in a checking account which was in my name for him. Are we required to contact the probate court for this small sum in the checking account?

No. Since the account is in your name, the bank will release that money to you upon your request and as such, probate is not required.
