What is the name of your state? I live in Ohio, the problem is in Illinois.
My mother is in ill health in Chicago. She owns an apartment
building that she lives in and my sister also has an apartment in the
same building. My mother has told me my sister will be the executor of
her estate. My sister and I are estranged. According to my mother, my
sister and I are to equally share the estate. Upon my mother's death, I
would like to have the apartment building sold. If my sister does not
agree to this, what can I do?

Once your mother dies the executor will be required to file the will with the Cook County probate court, That starts probate of the estate.

IF (and that's a big IF) the will stipulates that the two of you are to share in the estate, including the building, then you can make your wishes known to the executor. Your sister is not required to sell the building but only follow through on the will.

If she doesn't sell, then a deed in both names will be issued and from that point on you can file a Partition lawsuit to have the court sell the building and divide the proceeds (minus expenses).
