Intestate in California

What is the name of your state? California

My cousin died recently in California and no will has been found at this point. He has no spouse/partner or children, and his parents and brother pre-deceased him. If I understand my web research correctly, that makes his uncles (his father's brother & mother's brother) his legal heirs.

We are looking for information about everything from claiming the body for disposal to notifying clients of his death and making sure the estate gets processed properly.

Since his father's uncle (call him Gene) is mentally retarded, and to the best of our knowledge my cousin was his legal guardian, what's the best thing my father (mother's brother) can do to make sure that both Gene & my father are represented fairly?

Your father should file to be the personal representative of the estate or retain an attorney to file for him. I am not sure about the residency requirement for a PR in CA.
