Probate of estate without will

What is the name of your state? California
My first cousin died without any heirs except four first cousins. One has got an attorney and I was sent a notice of petition to administer the estate dated 2-09-07. Who handles the monies while the estate, houses,cars,money,life insurance etc. are being sold. Is everything itemized so we can see how much was sold? Spoke with the attorney but he said that I didn't have to appear at the hearing. I'm more interested in accountability for the assests.
