What is the name of your state? California

Me and my wife have now been married for a year and have been together for 7 years. We have home and a vehicle in her name only and we together have gained much personal property. What is the best way for either of us to protect our assets in the case of one of us passing on? We are in our 50's and have medical conditions that have made it basically impossible to get life insurance. If I passed on her income currently would allow her to met the financial obligations but it she passed on, I would not be able to pay the mortage. Any advice would be appreciated.
