What is the name of your state? ca
I have a misdemeanor record, credit theft, when I was 19 yrs old. Now 12 years later, I am waiting for an important job in a computer firm, programmer, who is doing the background check. I am afraid that my past history will show up. How far is the background check will it goes? Can I seal the record and How? Do I need a Lawyer? Basically what can I do to prevent my past history to hurt my future jobs. Can the company not hire me based on a history that is 12 years old? help!

"How far is the background check will it goes?"
*** Depends entirely on how 'deep' they want (and pay) to look. For some jobs, they can go back and interview your childhood buddies and your first girl/boy friend!!

"Can I seal the record and How?"
*** Depends on the EXACT charge and disposition. Go to:
http://www.howardsilverlaw.com/clearingcriminalrecord.htm
http://www.911law.com/expunge_record.htm
http://consumerlawpage.com/article/arrest.shtml

"Do I need a Lawyer?"
*** Usually, yes.

"Basically what can I do to prevent my past history to hurt my future jobs."
*** Be honest about it when asked. Do NOT try to hide it or lie about it.

"Can the company not hire me based on a history that is 12 years old?"
*** Of course they can. There is no obligation to hire you at all.

"help!"
*** Good song....
