bad advice from public defender

my sister's friend in Alabama received a check from a local man for some yard work he had done. after the check was cashed, the man said he had not written the check. my sister's friend was charged with forgery and sentenced to 3 years in an Alabama prison without any analysis of the signature or evidence other than the man's statement that he never wrote the check. his public defender refused to appeal and told him he could get out in less than a year on good behavior, even though he did not do anything. now my sister has been charged as an accessory because she helped her friend cash the check and she was assigned the same public defender, who has told her to plead guilty to the charges although she and her friend accepted and cashed the check in good faith and it has never been proven whose signature is on the check. what are her options?

Public Defenders have huge case loads and because of this, cannot and will not take the time to read each case thoroughly enough. So.....do your sister some justice, hire a private criminal defense attorney to see if this can be dismissed.
