Court date pushed back

What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? New York

A friend of mine was sentenced to two years for gun possession. It was his first offense, and the arresting officer admitted that he hadn't read him his rights. He was supposed to go in June 3rd, but they pushed back the date to September 10th. Now instead he has to go back in October to find out whether or not his sentence is going to start then or be postponed.... Why would the court keep postponing his sentence start date?
