I have a friend who has just found out (From the local Social Security Office) that had she waited until she was 60 to marry after being widowed, that she could realize a significant increase in her widow's benefits (about $10k/year).

She plans to divorce the new husband, and remarry him now that she is over 60 in an attempt to realize the widow's benefits.

(The Social Security Office told her that many people do this)

My question is: How long should she wait to get remarried? How much trouble will she get into should this technicality be "caught"? Or is it something that many do and it will be dropped should anyone notice?

Thank you in advance for your answer!
