My father died and didn't leave a will. My father's uncle is also his landlord. The landlord and his sister took several of my father belongings without my consent. They refuse to return my father's things they have within in their possession and will not tell me the whereabouts of his other belongings. They claim my father wanted them to have his things. My father informed me that he wanted me to have his belongings, but according to the police it is my word against theirs. As his daughter, what rights do I have to his assets in the state of New Jersey?

File paperwork at the courthouse to become administrator of your father's estate. Shortly after you file you will receive official papers from the court, called "letters testamentary", which will grant you the official legal authority to start claiming ALL assets.

You could then go over to the house, accompanied by a police escort or other family members to that the uncle and his sister don't threaten you with bodily harm, and start taking everything.

Please consult with a local lawyer about other steps you can take.
