What is the name of your state? Indiana

Our father recently passed away, leaving a short will and giving the house he lived in and personal property to his live in girlfriend. We believe there is a trust (or more than one) set up for the surviving children, but do not know where?
How will these matters come to light? Or where should we begin searching to make sure they do (we dont believe she will make sure they will!). We live out of state also (east coast), so that complicates matters....

Missing Trust

If you know if your father had an attorney that would be the first place to look. If you don't know if he did or what the attorney's name is, you might find this information in the house if you have access to it. Also, if you know what bank he used, he may have a safe deposit box there. With you being a surviving BLOOD releative, you would be able to gain access with the proper proof. I assume your birth cerificate would be enough. If nothing else, (if it was a small town he lived in) call all the banks and explain you are the surviving child and inquire if he had a box there.
Good luck in your search. I hope it works out for you.

Write a letter to all of the banks in the city where your relative died, that includes his SSN and last known address. If the bank was large enough to have a trust department, they can search their records there to see if there is a match that would show his trust account on file.

If that doesn't work, you should consider asking the executor to order a copy of the decedent's state and or federal tax return for the last year he was alive and filed, which might give some valuable clues.
