What is the name of your state? What is the name of your state? Missouri

We purchased a boat from an individual and paid cash. We were advised several times in front of witnesses it had been properly winterized and was lake ready. It has two big cracks in the engine block thus unusable until a new motor is put in it at a cost of approx. $4,000. We have requested in writing to this person that they cover 1/2 the cost. They refuse. In looking at all the paperwork, this individual purchased the boat from a family memeber and never put it in his name. Without it ever being registered in his name, will we have any chance in small claims court of getting a judgement in our favor or are we waisting our time? The person we purchased this from was a trusted acquaintence and unfortunately, there is no bill of sale. We've never been in this situation before and really aren't sure what to do. Thank you.
