medical leave

i have a question regarding my medical leave. i have been off work and am about to undergo spinal surgery. i recently received a letter in the mail stating that if i didn't return back to work by june 30 i would no longer have a job. i have already turned in the paperwork from my physician releasing me from medical leave on july10. can they legally fire me even though i have medical documentation?
