Well, it is very likely legal. Many companies and managers, to avoid liability for something they say (positive or negative) no longer tell other companies anything. Have you contacted your former boss to determine what the problem is?

Yes, as the post above states, most companies will no longer provide a professional reference to avoid potential defamation lawsuits.

All they will provide now is dates of employment, salary history, and position.

In fact most companies that want a reference realize this and don't even bother with professional references; they go straight to academic, social, etc.
