Hi again, I have done some research and found that a former employer cannot make false statements about a former employee. I definitely feel what happened with my potential job (see "hiring and firing") was a result of this. Would it be worth suing someone over? The prospective employer told me what the remark (negative) was, and I was shocked, and it did keep me form getting a job, which paid very well- now I am working at a mall, just until I can find another job in my field!!! The remarks made definitely made my prospective employer think I would make a lousy employee!!

It depends entirely what the remark is. You are correct that the employer cannot knowingly make false statments. Saying you stole while you were employed there when they know that not to be true is potentially actionable. Saying that you had a bad attitude if that is their honest opinion is not.
