Do I need to even get a divorce?

What is the name of your state? Michigan. I got married or so I though in South Carolina 16 years ago. This marriage took place in our home. We never went to any court to get a document only the person who performed the marriage had us sign a marriage certificate which was never recorded. Are we still legally married? We cannot find the document nor do we know if the person who performed the ceremony was legal.

No we never went to register at the court house. The person who performed the marriage was some guy from the Universal church of something or other, that is all I know. We cannot find that document
