I am employee in the state of Maryland. After 10 years of employment, my employer is requesting all employees to sign a one year renewable employment agreement. The items I find questionable or objectionable are a non-compete clause for 3 years, inability to sue for any reason, 60 days notice before resigning or forfeit accrued leave time (2 weeks is now the policy) and may be required to perform other duties without additional compensation. I would appreciate your comments on whether I have to legally sign this document in order to maintain my employment. Thank you for your assistance.

My response:

Since we haven't seen the "contract," my only suggestion to you would be to have the "agreement" reviewed by an attorney, before signing. That way, you and your attorney can compare each of the terms and conditions against State and Federal Employment Statutes, and case law.
