We have an employee who has been out sick for the last two weeks. She has verbally told staff that her doctor recommended that she reduce her work hours to 20 hours per week until she returns to full health. She also stated that she cannot afford to work part time and plans to come back to a full 40 hours schedule. Can we request a doctor's note verifying that this employee can in fact return to a full work schedule?

Of course you can request (insist upon, actually) a note from her physician substantiating the request.

If this employee/your company is subject to the FMLA, then this time can be attributed to FMLA leave entitlement.
