What is the name of your state? Maryland

I am working part time as a non-certified teacher for a Maryland county school system. I have not signed or been asked to sign any kind of contract or agreement. Am I covered by the FLSA? One principal did tell me that I was non-exempt

In my current and past postions my managers/supervisors are telling me very clearly that I am expected to do some or all of the preparation and planning on my own time without pay. I have also just been given a notice to attend mandatory work related training for which I will not be paid.

Is this all legal? Is it the "standard practice" in education? It all seems contrary to what I learned and practiced in my previous 25 year carrer, mostly as a manager, for a large corporation.

I'd appreciate any input anyone has. Thanks.
