Which law states that you must pay taxes?

I need to know which law states that you are required to pay your taxes. The law that lets you be taken to jail for refusing to pay them.

And remember to sign up for computer time while incarcerated and threaten to sue if the internet access restricts porno sites.

This guy doesn't want an answer; he wants a chance to jump on his soapbox and explain to us all that we don't really have to pay income taxes because they're ______________ (fill in his favourite tax evader question). Since he's asking a smart*ss queston, he's getting smart*ss answers.

Hi... ok, may be he is trying to be a smart @ss, etc.etc... but I am NOT, and now that the question has been posed, I am curious myself... IS there actually such a law? I'm assuming that there is, because I have heard of people going to jail for tax evasion....... or are they actually sentenced for some other reason under the guise of tax evasion. I mean-- you can not go to jail for refusing to pay a debt- BUT, you can go to jail for "contempt of court", by not following a judges' order to pay the debt. I'm not trying to be a smart @ss here, seriously... I just am really curious. THANX

This is why our writer's question was so ridiculous - - the authority for levying taxes; i.e., the Federal Income Tax, is embodied in the 16th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution - - which was ratified by 2/3 of the States way, way, way back in 1913.

All anyone has to do is read the 16th Amendment, and the Supreme Court cases that discuss it.
